Catnip is a perennial herb from the mint family that is well-known for its intoxicating effects on cats. Scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, it features heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges and small, white or purple flowers. The plant contains an essential oil called nepetalactone, which triggers a behavioral response in many domestic and wild cats. When exposed to catnip, cats may exhibit behaviors such as rolling, rubbing, purring, and increased playfulness. These effects usually last for about 10 to 15 minutes, after which the cat becomes temporarily immune to its effects for a short period. While catnip is most famous for its impact on felines, it has also been used in traditional medicine for its mild sedative properties in humans. It is easy to grow and can be found in gardens and as a commercial product in pet stores.
